Resistance Band Full-Body Workout for Beginners

A full-body resistance band workout for beginners: safe set-up, eight key exercises, a three-day weekly plan and simple ways to progress as you get stronger.

You need less than you think

You can start training with nothing but your bodyweight and a bit of floor. Equipment makes progression easier and adds variety, but it isn't a requirement, and no gadget will reduce chest fat on its own. Buy for the exercises you'll actually do, not for the promises on the box.

If you do want to invest, this is the order we suggest:

  1. Resistance bands with handles and a door anchor. They're low cost and space-saving, and they fill the biggest gap in bodyweight training: pulling exercises like rows and pulldowns.
  2. An exercise mat, for comfort and grip on hard floors.
  3. Adjustable dumbbells. They're the most versatile single upgrade, covering presses, rows, squats and hinges, and they grow with you.
  4. A sturdy adjustable bench, for incline pressing and a better range of motion.
  5. A food scale, if you want to learn portion sizes for a few weeks.

What to look for

  • Safety first. Check locking mechanisms on adjustable dumbbells, weight ratings on benches and wear on bands before each use.
  • Room to progress. Choose weight ranges and band resistances that suit you now and leave room to get stronger.
  • Space and storage. Measure your floor space before you buy, and consider how you'll store things so they're easy to reach.
  • Stability. Anything you press, step or sit on must not wobble, slide or tip.

Our approach to product recommendations

We haven't published specific product recommendations yet. When we do, they'll be based on genuine research or hands-on use, clearly labelled, and any affiliate relationship will be disclosed. We won't invent testing or rank products we haven't assessed. See our affiliate disclosure and editorial policy.

To see bands in action, try the resistance band chest workout, or the dumbbell chest workout if you have dumbbells. In the meantime, resistance bands vs dumbbells and home gym on a budget explain what to buy first, and the home workout guide for beginners shows how to train with bodyweight, bands or dumbbells, and the beginner strength-training guide covers gym and home options side by side.
